The base of this sculpture is a 26
by 12, three-inch thick pecan chopping block that once belonged
to a good friend’s grandfather. It has the cream color with
salting of reds and grays. A 30-inch deeply grooved gray weathered
round post sets straight up in the middle several inches from the
end of the chopping block. It was originally a six inch round post
from the Jollyville Stage Coach Corral. It has two sides that have
been cut almost flat leaving a one-quarter round as the third side.
The longest cut of the sides makes a sharp curve and flattens at
the top of the post. The log was slightly turned as the sides were
being cut and they make a genital spiral. The reds and yellows of
the cuts are highly finished and a sharp contrast to the gray of
the weathered wood. Seven gold gilded piano strings rise independently
and vertically from top end of the log. They are vertical for 5
to 7 inches and each makes their own loop out 10 to 16 inches before
connecting to the longest cut side of the post. The strings intersect
the post at slightly different angles. The shortest string connects
in the middle, 15 inches up from the cutting board. The longest
connects near the bottom of the post, 4 inches up from the cutting
board. The piano wires pierce through the center of a one and one
half-inch gold gilded cube. The cubes are in random order the first
being at the highest point and the others spaced at different intervals
as the strings turn down to meet the post. Out of our Minds.
